LAND AND LIFE
CHIANG MAI, THAILAND
HOW MIGHT TOURISM BE AN ASSET FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT?
How might we grow communities sustainably off the land? How might we live, grow economies and alleviate poverty while remaining in harmony with our environment? How might we honour the land and culture that preceded and honouring the land and culture that preceeded and Nurtures us? Live these questions and more while experiencing the beauty and lushness of rural living in Northern Thailand.
This course runs in MAY, JUNE, JULY, NOVEMBER and DECEMBER.
Land and Life takes participants on a learning journey from the rural to urban with a focus on the concepts of culture, resources and community. Economic growth and development usually happens at the expense of wiping out local cultures, traditions and the environment that supplies our needs. How then do we honour the land that nurtures us?
In this course, participants begin to rethink existing ideas of tourism and its accompanying destructive side-effects; they will delve deeper into the dimensions of ethical travel and analyse tourism's potential as an asset for holistic and sustainable community development. Witness the different ways village communities in Northern Thailand honour and protect their land amidst a modernising world.
As part of the Skillseed Challenge, participants are expected to create an advocacy project to educate their peers by sharing stories about how to develop a community while preserving and protecting local culture and resources.
