The course is designed to challenge participants to rethink their personal assumptions of the physical and social environment around them. Through a series of hands-on workshop sessions and local community trails, participants will learn how to recognize and understand social problems that plague cities, make parallels to their own community and brainstorm innovative solutions!

Why are portions of communities hidden in developed cities? What are the everyday issues they face? Leveraging on concepts of Design-Thinking and Theory of Change participants are challenged to think critically about the hidden issues in a community and be empowered to develop projects to address these problems. As part of the Skillseed Challenge, participants may expect to use their knowledge from the course to draw parallels and make comparisons to their own communities. Participants may expect to present their ideas in the form of presentations and photographic journeys, thereby laying the foundation for potential projects to engage their own communities!

THOUGHTS of Discovery

“I have always wanted to be a sociologist and this course corresponded to my interest. Throughout the course, we went to different public places to explore social issues. I understood more about the hidden issues in Singaporean communities, in areas like Geylang, which tourists or even local people ignore. The workshops in the course also gave me a better understanding about issues around water and persons’ with disabilities. I comprehended the importance of solving such issues through my personal experience. The design thinking course was helpful as well. My perspective about Singapore has definitely been renewed after this experience.”
