local changemakers

WEST BALI, INDONESIA

Bali is well known as a popular tourist spot for many travelling for a perfect beach gateway, yoga retreat or trekking action on the island's scared mountains. However, behind these tourist attractions lies the struggle to find the balance between economic opportunity and preservation of the environment and culture, for the Balinese community. This course challenges students to look closer into the communities they visit, understand the important role of ground-up initiatives and discover what responsible tourism means and the implications it has on communities.

During this course, participants will visit a wide variety of social enterprises and ground-up initiatives, each tackling different issues faced by the Balinese community.

Participants will closely examine the effects of tourism in Bali, through site visits and interactions with local change makers understand how individuals and communities tackle these effects and determine for themselves the role responsible tourism plays in helping communities preserve the integrity of their culture and environment. Participants will also get to learn more about the Balinese history and culture though guided tours and temple visits.

This course is targeted at youth who are interested in community development, social and environmental issues, tourism and particularly those who enjoy interacting with local communities and want to look beyond the conventional way of travel.
